INSPIRED BY NATURE
STRONG COMPONENTS – MADE WITH EASE
Natural structures seek to achieve the best possible functional properties with a
minimum outlay in energy and materials. As a result nature's forms and the
properties of natural materials adapt to deal with their stress exposure by means
of embedded reinforcing fibres in parent materials. This is how grasses, despite
their low weight, are able to withstand the fiercest storms. Giant bamboos utilise
very little material to create extremely robust structures which enable them to
grow to an astonishing height of 20 metres or more.
Perfected by nature over millions of years of evolution, fibre composite
technology has adopted this principle. Reinforcing fibres
(glass, coal or natural fibres) are embedded in a base matrix
(thermoplastic plastic). This improves mechanical properties whilst at the same
time achieving reduced weights. Therefore this technology is perfectly suited to
the manufacture of sophisticated lightweight components, and finds application
in leisure and sports equipment engineering, aircraft construction and transport
as well as in the automotive industry; in fact, wherever low weight combined with
high strength characteristics are required! New applications that seem utopian
today are also possible. This technology definitely has prospects.
Thanks to decades of experience in the field of thermoplastic plastics injection
moulding, extrusion and a variety of laser- and joining process technologies,
OKE is a pioneering and innovating partner to industry. By expanding into fibre
composite technology with thermoplastic plastics we are taking a natural step
forwards in broadening our range of skills.
